FIVE TYLER, THE CREATOR 'FITS

By Sam Higgins, March 6, 2017

Purveyor of fresh prints, master of the pastel palette, biggest fan of his own brand — oh, and a producer, video director and head of a rap collective, of course. It’s safe to say Tyler, The Creator has plenty on his plate, but that hasn’t suppressed his style prowess. To mark his 26th birthday, we’ve taken a closer look at five occasions Tyler has produced his finest sartorial work.

Statement pants

Since 2011 — aside from aiding Supreme’s rise to hypebeast staple — Tyler, The Creator has been busy teaching us all how to nail eccentric style. Sure, that means the odd questionable pairing of prints, but by now the Odd Future frontman is proficient in slotting patterned pieces into his everyday gear. Here, for example, strolling around his Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival, he shunned typical festival gear and managed to make a pair of bright blue, fire-laden pants work alongside a white Golf Wang tee, blue Converse One Stars and a beige cap. Strong.

Soccer shirt

While we could question whether many in the hip-hop world have ever endured 90 minutes at the Britannia Stadium on a rainy Tuesday night in February, it’s safe to say soccer fashion fever has swept through the scene in the last couple of years. But while most wouldn’t mess with the iconic black and white Juventus home strip, Tyler, The Creator — ever the sartorial innovator — decided to produce his own homage to the Italian team, cleverly switching up the sponsor for his own brand. The rapper then effortlessly styled out a potential garish print clash with some pastel-pink shorts and took to the stage at Governors Ball in New York to dance around in a fashionable blur.

Paisley polo

It’s all well and good curating a style spectacle out of on-trend items, but often true sartorial brilliance shines through when breathing new life into neglected patterns or pieces. And if anyone is willing to tackle the toughest styles, it’s Tyler, The Creator. Here, skateboarding around New York last year, he did just that, throwing on a canary-colored, paisley-printed, denim-collared, long-sleeved polo shirt. While the thought of all that would see most of the stylish set quaking in their skate kicks, Tyler simply kept everything else neat and neutral with some slim black jeans, trusty Vans Old Skools and a blue cap from his own brand.

Summery soft hues

Tyler’s love for a pastel palette means that, come summer, his 'fit seamlessly shifts into seasonally-appropriate attire. And, by now, we know he’s not one to shy away from bold tones or textures, so assume that throwing on minty green shorts and matching the hue with his Vans was done with the nonchalance with which we might turn to fail-safe monochrome. His white tee and pastel pink cap was more beach than burger-shop-ready, but heading into In-N-Out Burger in Cali, Tyler maintained the pale palette and completed his summer steez with a canvas tote.

Pinstripe overalls

Is there anything more envy-inducing than someone who can pull off a pinstriped pair of overalls? Probably not, but at least we can admire Tyler’s bold brilliance here while performing in San Francisco. The stylish lyricist kept things simple in the surrounding elements — a pair of satisfyingly worn-in blue and black Vans, a white GOLF logo tee and a green five panel — giving his workwear classic the perfect platform to shine.
