Long-sleeved and short-sleeved tee

The double tee trick is one that first made waves earlier this year, providing a simple springtime solution to the layering dilemma. But with the right pairing, the technique can also be utilized to great effect in the summer months, too. Follow this stylish fella with a white base layer — a long-sleeved tee — so the bolder, logo tee layered over the top has the perfect backdrop.

Although fewer layers are usually needed in summer, it’s all about keeping things simple and having a versatile jacket at your disposable for when the clouds inevitably appear and a chill sets in. A classic shacket is your best bet, boasting the form of your favorite shirt but the wind-beating ability of a classic cover-up. If you choose a patterned piece, keep it monochrome and give an injection of color via your tee, layered beneath.

Lightweight knits have been all over the place this summer, and although you wouldn't usually associate a sweater with the sun, the key piece can actually play the perfect role in a layered look on warmer days. Like your grandma's best needlework, make sure your knit is the statement piece — so we’re talking a bold color and definitely some stitched patterns. Its ideal partner is a lightweight windbreaker or trench, especially in muted tones or black. Tuck in your knitted polo and let the double-collared action offer seasonal style and substance.

Likewise, turtlenecks usually only come out in the "curling up in front of the fire" months. But opting for a thin, lightweight option this summer and buddying it up with a lightweight waterproof windbreaker can be a match made in seasonal-sartorial heaven. Switch up the fastening on your jacket and only button the top two to bring more attention to the contrasting necklines.

If your late-summer layering scenario is less about finding the right balance of warmth in changeable weather and more about showing off your favorite vacay-vibes, align your style with this stylish show-goer. Here, it’s all about giving your patterned, short-sleeved shirt the best chance of shining. Tuck it into your pants, but keep it unbuttoned and layer a thin, white tank beneath to help the red print pop brilliantly.
