INSPIRATION AND ADVICE

HOW WE DO: HAWAIIAN SHIRTS

By Lakeisha Goedluck, May 22, 2018

At this time of year, it’s common practice to roll out your printed threads. There’s a lot of hype around Breton stripes and floral prints this season, but if you’re feeling something a little different, why not throw a Hawaiian-print shirt into the mix? For inspiration on how to wear one, take a look at how the guys at ASOS HQ are styling theirs.

When you think of a Hawaiian shirt, usually bright in-your-face graphics come to mind. But if your style is more subdued, fear not — you can still join in on the trend. Pick a dark-colored patterned shirt, like our Junior Sub Editor Ashley is wearing here.

For ultimate spring/summer steez, he’s chosen to wear two prints together by opting for a monochrome striped tee to go underneath his palm tree-covered shirt. On his bottom half, he wisely sticks to the same colors — a pair of dark navy chinos and white Converse sneakers complement his shirt nicely.

Alternatively, if standout prints are more your vibe, channel the style of our CRM Artworker, Tom. He’s gone for a pastel-pink skinny-fit number, which is best worn on its own — making it perfect for hotter days.

Down low, he switches up his color palette and goes for a pair of roll-cuffed khaki chinos — the contrast works to bring out the patterning on his shirt even more so. On foot, he dons staple black Converse kicks to not detract attention away from his top half.

Now, a sure-fire way to make sure that whatever print you’re wearing stands out is to go for a predominantly black ensemble. Our Artworker James starts off his get-up with a white T-shirt before layering up with a black Hawaiian shirt — notice how the hue of his tee corresponds to the lily patterning.

When it comes to the rest of his look, he keeps it as uniform as possible: black jeans and black Air Max 90s. For a lesson in how to inject your everyday style with some added flavor, look no further.

If you’re after a typical Hawaiian shirt — palm trees, scenic water, the works — then take a look at our Culture Writer Sam’s short-sleeved choice. Just like James, he’s gone for a plain white T-shirt to wear underneath to add a relaxed edge to his ’fit.

As Hawaiian prints were ubiquitous in the '70s/'80s, Sam’s chosen to rock corduroy pants to go with his shirt, as it’s a fabric that was also highly popular during that period. He rounds off his retro-inspired look with a minimal pair of white kicks for an all-around casual vibe.
