INSPIRATION AND ADVICE

5 SOLID LOOKS FROM MILAN FASHION WEEK

By Lakeisha Goedluck, June 22, 2018

If your sartorial taste tends to lend itself towards the more luxurious side of things, then Milan is the fashion capital for you. The SS19 menswear shows continued in the city last weekend, and boy did the guests fully flex for the occasion. Here’s a selection of the best-dressed attendees to inspire your wardrobe this spring/summer.

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: printed short-sleeved shirts are where it’s at this season. Whether you opt for a Hawaiian-style revere-collar number or a simple striped shirt with a retro flavor to it, it’s a solid idea to add at least one to your arsenal. This guy teams his yellow one — a color that the gang at ASOS HQ are fully backing — with a plain white tee and a cross-body bag which reflects the color of the patterning on his shirt. Follow in his footsteps and keep your bottom half basic: a pair of rolled up skater jeans and Converse One Stars should do.

Another style hack making waves for SS18 is the return of the matching set. Bold colors are best, but if you prefer a more pared-back option, take a cue from this dude and opt for a dogstooth-print two-piece set instead. Emanating serious Scandi vibes, he picks a classic white T-shirt to form the basis of his get-up. By remixing his look with grandadcore tropes — notice that printed flat cap and those standout glasses — he compiles an outfit that’s as fresh as it is '70s funk.

OK, so wearing an all-black outfit when it’s warm outside may sound like a ludicrous idea, but you’ve got to admit that this guy looks enviously good. The trick to wearing dark colors in summer is to go for lightweight layers and throw in hints of a vibrant hue to keep your outfit interesting. This streetwear aficionado goes for a Heron Preston T-shirt which he pairs with refined, darted slacks for a smart-casual sartorial success. He accessorizes with a Gucci flight bag, shades and a flat cap (like the aforementioned gent) and finishes his ’fit off with a flourish by selecting a pair of kicks in the same colorway as his tee.

Now, we know we just advocated for wearing all-black, but an all-white outfit is a sensible-yet-steezy option too. If you’ve been following what’s happening on the SS19 runways, you’ll know that the likes of Prada, Valentino and MSGM sent their models out dressed in bucket hats. This guy’s clearly ahead of the curve, choosing a white one to kick off the theme of his monochromatic head-to-toe ensemble. A structured coach jacket, overly distressed jeans and those now-iconic chunky Balenciaga Triple S sneakers make for one cool, camera-friendly outfit.

Perhaps the most laid-back look of the lot, this guy’s get-up is dripping with '80s hip hop-inspired flavor. Starting off with a Kangol hat — popularized by the likes of LL Cool J back in the day — he puts together a stripe-heavy outfit that’s tonally on point. His horizontally striped T-shirt goes so well with those caramel-colored side-striped pants, but the pièce de résistance of his ensemble is that ultra-luxurious Fendi fanny pack. Extra points for those geek chic (cringe terminology, solid aesthetic) white frames, though.
