Awards shows…always a blast. But the Grammys? They're the best. And everyone in the industry (and we mean everyone—just peep the performer list) will be in attendance at this year's big event on Sunday night. So it's hard to believe that a little over 20 years ago, there were zero rap artists in the house. For all the iconic Grammy rap moments (Eminem and Elton John, anyone?) we've seen since then, we have two men to thank: DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince (a.k.a. Will Smith). Here's why these dudes changed the game…forever.
1. These days, artists like Kendrick Lamar, Jay Z, and Kanye West dominate the rap portion of the show. But in 1989, the first ever Grammy for Best Rap Performance was awarded to the DJ-rapper duo for their smash hit "Parents Just Don't Understand."
2. They pioneered hip-hop style—and definitely weren't afraid to take a few fashion risks. Varsity jackets, all logo everything, funky prints, gold chains, baseball caps…yep, they did 'em all. And we're all still following their lead today.
3. Creativity is key when it comes to standing out—and they always made sure to do just that. One way? Epic music videos. Yeezy may be known as one of hip-hop's biggest visual storytellers thanks to videos like "Runaway," but DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince paved the way. In honor of their monumental win, we present the "Parents Just Don't Understand" video. They just don't make 'em like this anymore.
