Celebrity man buns
Style Advice |
2015 has been
the year of the man bun. From popstars' topknots to soccer players' shaggy twists, the hairstyle's rise to A-list levels has been helped along by the star power of almost every male celeb on the planet (or at least, that's how it seems). Here's our guide to the five signature styles — read on, and then go and twist your own topknot.
Jared Leto — the ombré bun
Mr. Leto was an early champion of the man bun, having, as he does, the lustrous flowing mane of a particularly well-conditioned unicorn. He's also been one of the movers and shakers in the two-tone hair trend, and this take on the man bun shows off his blonde highlights particularly well. It suits a surfer look and can be worn sleek or shaggy — you choose.
Aidan Turner — the well-groomed twist
Actor Aidan Turner has tamed his shoulder-length curls here for a red carpet appearance and he looks damn good. The contrast of rugged beard and groomed topknot works particularly well for formal occasions, giving off an unconventional vibe.
Oliver Proudlock — the hun
ASOS Stylist, designer and socialite
Proudlock is a fan of the half-up, half-down look, as worn by Zayn Malik, Justin Bieber et al. Shorn sides with a longer top section is particularly zeitgeisty right now — wear with longline and a lot of black to nail the look.

Andy Carroll — the half-pulled-through topknot
England striker and long-hair haver Andy Carroll obviously has practical considerations to think about when doing his hair of a morning — how not to get it in his eyes or get it accidentally yanked by a diving defender, for instance. The slicked back and half-pulled through bun is an eminently effective solution — it's quick, easy and looks fine when it's a bit sweaty.
Chris Hemsworth — the low and slicked-back bun
Along with fellow Hollywood big-timers Orlando Bloom and Leo DiCaprio, Chris Hemsworth favors a low and masculine man bun. It fits under a paparazzi-repelling baseball hat and looks good with a parting, plus it suits all ages. Make it your weekend go-to with jeans and casual staples.
