Looking for fresh ways to carry your stuff in style? Get the lowdown on five strong styles below.
If the last time you saw a satchel was in high school, then it's time to look again. A clever choice for stuffing your laptop into for work, they're far cooler than a standard case or basic backpack — honest. Go all-black (and all-leather, if you're feeling flush) and carry it by the handle for a strictly business approach. Or sling it over your shoulder for a slice of "freelancer who's just hit his deadline" attitude. But no swinging it around your head, please — you're not in junior high now…
Got your back
Not all backpacks are created equal. On the one hand, you've got the standard types that commuters use to lug their sandwiches to work in. On the other, you've got the likes of Eastpak, who offer classic everyday cool (with a pinch of skater-boy flair) in an easy-to-carry package. Choose graphic prints and vibrant colors to stand out from the crowd or get subtle with pared-back design-conscious options from the likes of Diesel and Fila. But whatever you pick, don't forget the biggest dilemma you'll face — two arms versus one shoulder.
Take the tablets
Beware — there's some crap you can scoop up on the street to give your prized tablet all the allure of a battered Nokia. Assuming you don't want that, you've got two ways to go: accentuate the iPad's minimalist cool with something appropriately modern and understated or shout your new toy's brilliance to the skies with a statement design from the likes of Ted Baker. Whatever you choose, check it's got a lot of padding — a big fat screen crack is an accessory you could do without.
Whether you're heading off for a bachelor party or another quick break from reality, a stylish holdall has it covered. Basically, however messy your packing style is, you'll at least look sharp on the way to the airport. Retro sporty takes on the standard holdall add a bit of '90s soccer cool (but leave the wet-look gel at home) or you can keep it strictly contemporary with covetable modern choices from Lyle & Scott and Calvin Klein that are too good to stay in the overhead locker. Budget options are great news for the gym too, but make sure you don't let your skanky sports socks rot at the bottom.
Totes are the designer spectacles of the bag world — pick something great and you'll easily straddle the sweet spot between looking geeky and cool. So, if you're after that alternative "back from the second-hand store with a bagful of vintage vinyl" look, then an ultra-simple canvas tote with a hand-drawn indie-style design is most definitely your man. Meanwhile, smarter types after a less studenty feel will lap up a Fred Perry checked shopper or something standout in faux leather.
