January's almost over, which means you can stop juice cleansing, gym loitering, cowering under the covers or whatever else you've been doing for the past 30 days. Us? We've been mostly staying indoors, watching music videos and picking up style tips. Here's what we've learned.
Last Shadow Puppets – Bad Habits
The Last Shadow Puppets' comeback single, eight years after their debut, features an evolved sound (grand Scott Walker strings replaced with something grimier and more urgent) but an enduring commitment to strong retro clothes. Alex Turner doesn't do a lot in the video, which is mainly a showcase for some excellently sleazy '70s Italian horror-style visuals and Miles Kane's facial expressions. But what he does do (stand around in the background with floppy hair and excellent leather jacket) he does with all the poise we've come to expect.
Pusha T feat. Kanye West, A$AP Rocky and The-Dream – M.P.A.
Pusha T enlists some help from his famous buds for the latest cut from his superb Darkest Before Dawn: The Prelude album and they bring some great clothes with them. We're not sure which we like best: The-Dream's customized khaki outerwear, A$AP Rocky's super-distressed unofficial band merch or Pusha's embellished turquoise coach jacket.
Cullen Omori – Cinnamon
There's a lot to like in the debut single/video from ex-Smith Westerns frontman Cullen Omori — a shimmering earworm of a tune, '90s VHS effects and a scene where he burns one of his old band's posters (subtle!). Most all, it contains a lot of Omori mooching about moodily while showing off his cool, oversized leather jacket and rockstar hair combo. Spicy.
Major Lazer feat. Wild Belle – Be Together
This clip takes the classic "doomed biker romance" pop cliché and updates it with... well, it doesn't really update it at all, actually. Nothing wrong with that though, as black leather jackets, bad tattoos, mirrored sunglasses and fatalistic motorcycle-based love affairs have always, and will always, be cool. Bonus points for poncho dude in the funeral scene.
