If you can get your first pool party of the season even close to that of a high-rolling, champagne-spraying hip-hopper, you know you're doing summer right. There's cool dudes, hot ladies, cold booze, grilled burgers and, if you're P Diddy, a jet ski for absolutely no reason whatsoever. But there's also the style. Rappers are well versed in dressing for the poolside, given the sheer amount of music videos they like to shoot there. Here are five lifesaving style tips from some of the best…
Mac Miller – Don't Mind If I Do (2010)
2010 was one busy year for Miller, sweating over a debut album that smashed into the charts at number one a year later. No surprise then, that Mac's rewarding some of his hard work in this video, taking some well-earned chill time beside the pool. Here, he proves that sunglasses at night are only acceptable by the pool. There, rocking some after-dark shade says "Man, where did the day go? I’ve been too busy cannonballing, burger flipping and cork popping to realize."
Birdman feat. P Diddy – Do That (2002)
Some music videos totally stand the test of time. This right here is not one of them. While Birdman sends his "birdcall" over to the laydeez on the beach and P Diddy casually revs up his jet ski in the pool (you're going nowhere, Combs), we’re treated to a lesson in never donning oversized sports jerseys when the inflatables are out.
The Notorious B.I.G – Juicy (1994)
Nothing says, "Guys, please enjoy the spoils of my double platinum success" like rolling up to the water with a billowing collar around your neck. Just look at Biggie, straight bossing it in his as he looks down on his invite-only revelers. This season, you can do no wrong if you strut up to the deep end in a Cuban collar, making sure to keep that neckline loose. It’s the shirt of the summer, throwing things right back to the '50s and helping you channel a machismo the size of Tom Selleck's (a long-time advocate of the Cuban). Luckily, you don’t need his impressive chest rug to make it work for you (although, it might help).
French Montana feat. Drake, Rick Ross, P Diddy – Pop That (2013)
When you've invited Rick Ross, Lil Wayne and Drake to lend their faces to your poolside vid, there's no question who we'll be looking at for some wardrobe inspiration. Yep, all eyes on Drizzy. In true Champagne Papi style, he offers us not one, but two excellent swimming lessons: one being to pack a bomber for when the sun goes down and takes the temperature with it and, the other, that translucent lenses on shades are ballin'.
2Pac – I Get Around (1993)
Whoa there, Pac. Whoa right there for one minute. Your swim trunks… white, are they? Really? You know what sometimes happens to white trunks when you inevitably get pushed into the water? They, ya know, drop the curtain on your special bits. They reveal your secret parts. You need some big, er, balls to take that risk. Very big indeed.
