From clashing in front of crowds outside Lewisham McDeez with his crew The Square, to regular plays on the radio, Elf Kid is the South London MC making big moves in grime. His breakout hit Golden Boy got a world premiere from Zayn Lowe and its video — a love letter to Lewisham — was one of last year's most stylish. We caught up with the Blue Borough boy to talk sneakers, tracksuits and being business-minded.
Who is the most stylish man in grime?
At the moment I think it's Novelist. Nov likes the East Coast-wear — a lot of black, baggy jeans, Converse and stuff that you see in old-school American movies.
Where do you think the grime scene is headed?
I think the grime scene is headed to wherever it wants to be headed. This year has been one of the biggest years for grime and it hasn't even ended. Everyone's getting good opportunities and people are opening doors for the likes of me to come through. There's a lot of support and we’re starting to realize that when we come together, that's when we're best.
Where are you headed?
I'm going to graduate from uni — where I'm studying Business, Entrepreneurship and Innovation — produce an album, build a business. I want to be a proper entrepreneur in grime, not just an MC. Being an MC is easy but I want to be my own boss.
