6 SUITS TO DREAM ABOUT

By Maybelle Morgan, October 10, 2017

Fashion month giveth and fashion month taketh away (our hard-earned money), because since catching sight of the street-style pack in New York, London, Milan and Paris, we can’t get suits off the brain. And no, we’re not talking ill-fitting work experience two-pieces in black and navy — these beauties are deep velvet, in preppy checks or the palest cloud blue. Here are six to obsess over…

Baby blues

The '80s called, but they’re not getting their tailoring back. This double-breasted oversized number in powder blue is pure Dynasty, and blogger Vanessa Hong takes it to the next level. To pull off the extra material, keep the rest of the outfit feminine and minimal: artsy red drop earrings, blue barely there heels, a red bucket bag and some cool perspex shades.

Pinstripe play

Forget those Wall Street associations — the pinstripe suit is cooler than you think. But getting it right hangs precariously on two things: the cut and what you wear it with. The blazer should be longline with oversized lapels; the pants, high-waisted and flared. Take it from business to means-business with fash-forward accessories: think a logo hardware belt, a slogan tee, '90s jet-black shades and monochrome, color-block heels.

That '70s show

If you’re going to go retro, go all the way. Take tips from fashion blogger Natalie Suarez, who makes the '70s her head-to-toe game with her flared, wallpaper-print, mahogany suit. The jacket is layered over a walnut turtleneck knit, shades are oversized and the bag is adorned with groovy sewn-on flowers for more throwback feels.

Blue velvet

It’s coming up to velvet season and nothing says statement like a midnight-blue two-piece featuring all-over florals. To keep the material from being too overbearing, dress it down with kitsch additions, such as a '90s acid-colored cartoon tee, white mod booties and some XXL gold ear bling.

Picnic time

For a truly unique suit experience, it’s all about the unusual print. In this case, with blogger Lucy Williams, quirky blue, white and red checks and high-waisted cropped pants make this wool two-piece a winner. A tucked-in slogan tee breaks up the print and patent oxblood boots mix up the texture a bit. Pointed '90s shades and a patchwork leather bag finish the look.

All-white, alright

Be still our beating hearts. This is one to write home about. Your wardrobe pin-up here is John Travolta circa Saturday Night Fever, so keep the suit oversized and floor-skimming. This time, swap out the '70s wide-collared shirt for a printed black button-up and add some disco-ready off-white booties.
