INSPIRATION AND ADVICE

HOW TO DO THANKSGIVING IN STYLE

By Hallie Liang, November 15, 2017

It's hard to believe, but there's only a week to go before the biggest dinner of the year. Whether you’re heading home to the ‘rents, throwing a Friendsgiving bash or spending time with the S.O.’s fam, make sure you do it in style. To get those creative gears spinning, we chatted with ceramicist-slash-florist Linda Bui, whose Brooklyn studio ma đam creates the most jaw-dropping floral arrangements we have ever seen. Read on for her tips on decorating with florals (ultimate adulting goals, right?) and, of course, how to nail that Thanksgiving outfit.

What are your Thanksgiving plans this year?
This year, I'll be spending it at the Yale Club in Manhattan [with the in-laws]. I've never really liked Thanksgiving food, but I always try to indulge myself with my own dessert choices. I bring a Salty Caramel Apple Pie from 4&20 Blackbirds every year. This time I'm also adding a selection of Jeni's Ice Cream from my home state because you cannot have pie without ice cream!

What are your favorite flowers to use in the fall?
Some of my favorite flowers for the fall are proteas, roses, amaranths, astilbes and so much more. I love texture and depth in my arrangements so I like to use other plants along with my flowers like eucalyptus, thistle, berries, artichokes, pampas grass or even dried flowers. The stranger or more alien-like the arrangement, the better.

What are your tips for creating a floral centerpiece for the Thanksgiving dinner table?
For centerpieces, you want to keep them low and make sure that they look great at every angle because everyone at the table will have their own view of the arrangement. You don't want to block people from seeing each other, but I encourage a little height and dimension because you still want an interesting arrangement.

How did you first get into ceramics and floral arrangements?
While working [in supply chain for beauty companies], I missed having a creative outlet. I joined a ceramic studio in Williamsburg a few summers ago. Gradually with practice, I got better and was able to make more and find my own style. I always had a great interest in plants, flowers and botany in general. At one point, I was really into plants. Once my apartment was filled with too many plants and there was no more room... I started to focus on flowers and found that I love putting together arrangements. It was natural for me to pair them with my ceramic vases.

Why did you choose this outfit for your Thanksgiving look?
I am really excited that it's finally getting cooler in New York because I love layering and oversized dresses. So I definitely wanted a piece that could be worn with pants. I love the high neck of this Reclaimed Vintage dress. It gives it a proper attending-a-nice-event vibe. It may be a little too formal for me alone, but with jeans, it a little more interesting and approachable. The boots also add to a more casual vibe.

What's one essential or trend that you're loving right now?
Velvet has been really popular, and I love that it's still having a moment. It's so lush and perfect for the fall. It can come in a gothy black or so many other rich colors, giving each item so much texture.
