Bub-bye 2013. What up, 2014! Forget what your horoscope says, everything you need to know for a fashionable year ahead is right here.
She’s the girl of 2014 and here’s why: the super-smiley, extra-cute model walked for all the big guns in the Spring '14 shows, including Marc Jacobs, Versace, Miu Miu, Giles and Chanel. Follow her on Instagram to check out her model LOLz with Cara Delevingne and co.
When it comes to pants this year, baggy equals best. The bejeweled, skater-style jeans on Marc Jacobs’ last catwalk for Louis Vuitton (left) first got everyone sitting up and taking notice, then Kristen Stewart wore wide-leg pants to the Chanel Métiers d’Art show (right), making it a done deal for a looser-looking 2014.
Here’s a history lesson for you. Back in the early '80s, fashion was a pretty top-down thing—magazines didn’t really mix high fashion and streetwear—until Buffalo, a collective of designers, stylists, artists and photographers including famed stylist Ray Petri, changed all that. Heck, Neneh Cherry was even a member and wrote Buffalo Stance about the group. Give 'em a Google (it’s your Spring '14 Pinterest board waiting to happen).
If one bag could represent next year, it would be this incredible Chanel bag from the Spring '14 collection. Why? Well, it's equal parts gap-year travels and artist’s studio and it's also got a big ol' logo (all three things are major for 2014). If your budget doesn’t run to the real deal, customize your own backpack with paint, logo badges and a few random trinkets.
To be properly down with 2014 you need to know your Matisse from your Van Gogh. Artists and their masterpieces were the muses for Spring '14, from Prada to Chanel and Giles. The coolest name to drop? Brassaï, whose photos of Parisian graffiti in the '20s inspired the Céline show (pictured).
If you haven't seen Blue Crush (starring a baby Kate Bosworth), Point Break (Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze) or the 1966 surf documentary The Endless Summer, then get on Netflix to stream them stat. They’re guaranteed to get you geared up for the laid-back surfer style that 2014 has in store. Come summer, if you’re not repping lifeguard faves like the Bermuda short (seen at Marc Jacobs and Jonathan Saunders, pictured), pool sliders or a Baywatch/Miley Cyrus-approved high-cut swimsuit, then we’ll eat our swim cap.
Giving nail art a run for its money, eyelids are the new makeup hot spot. Sparking the trend were Chanel’s Spring '14 rainbow eyes as well as Marc by Marc Jacobs’ electric blue eyeshadow, leading to cool girls like Atlanta de Cadenet catching the bug. You know what to do!
