CARHARTT WIP: VINTAGE VS. NOW

By Lakeisha Goedluck, March 15, 2018

One of America’s longest-standing workwear brands, Carhartt is also a firm favorite among street stylers everywhere. Founded in 1889 by Hamilton Carhartt, the family owned-company fast became well known for its production of sturdy, practical pieces. In 1994, responding to the popularity of its XXL cuts in the hip-hop world, it launched a European "Work In Progress" offshoot, focused more on the streetwear scene than the hardware store. To trace the evolution of the brand, we’ve had a look at the latest WIP range to see how it relates to the old-school pieces from the label that can be found on ASOS Marketplace...

Returning to the archive, these vintage workwear pieces are a testament to Carhartt's authenticity when it comes to design. From structured worker jackets to functional washed-denim overalls, the brand has consistently delivered relaxed, durable staples. This retro quarter-zip sweater, casual pair of dark-wash jeans and camel-colored jacket wouldn’t seem out of place as part of their latest offering.

Looking at Carhartt's most recent collection in comparison, you’ll notice that its aesthetic has remained intact over the decades. The silhouette of this jacket is routinely reissued — in a versatile navy hue, the wool-mix number makes for an ideal transitional outerwear option. This gray crewneck sweatshirt serves an instant wardrobe staple, while khaki cargo pants and a rust-colored beanie adhere to the label’s earth-toned color palette. The more you know, right?
