STYLE AND CULTURE

3 LOOKS FROM OSCAR FLICKS

By Matt Glazebrook, March 3, 2018

It’s the 90th Academy Awards on Sunday and while there’s plenty of interest in the Best Film category for a change — with political horror and sensual sea-monster romance going up against the usual historical biopics — the real drama, for us anyway, lies in figuring out what style tips we can steal from the year’s most celebrated flicks. Here are three Oscar-worthy outfits inspired by the 2018 nominees.

Call Me By Your Name

Costume designer Giulia Piersanti took inspiration from photographer Charles H. Traub’s candid snaps of 1980s Italian street life for her work on Call Me By Your Name, and the result is a fine vintage ensemble cast that feels less retro fancy dress and more a naturalistic collection of timeless, preppy summer staples. And short shorts. Lots of short shorts. Soak up the seductively sun-kissed vibe in a classic polo shirt, denim cut-offs, hi-top white Converse and some boho beads.

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

Waging a one-woman war on a small town’s incompetent sheriff’s department counts as a solid shift, so it’s a good job that Frances McDormand’s Mildred Hayes knows her way around a bit of classic workwear 'fit. Switch out Hayes’ boiler suit for another on-trend bit of utilitarian Americana — Dickies overalls — and layer up with a fiery red long-sleeve tee. Workboots from heritage brand Eastland and a blue-collar bandana complete a ruggedly righteous ’fit.

Blade Runner 2049

Denis Villeneuve’s sequel to Blade Runner may have missed out on nods for the big prizes, but is a contender in the cinematography, sound and really good retro-future-goth outerwear categories. Ryan Gosling’s 1970s-sports-manager-meets-2040s-replicant-hunter shearling coat is probably a bit toasty for awards season, but this Calvin Klein trench is equally suited to mooching moodily around dystopian cityscapes (or, you know, your local bar).
