INSPIRATION AND ADVICE

ASOS INSIDERS WEAR UTILITY THREADS

By Matt Glazebrook, December 4, 2018

We don’t actually make our ASOS Insiders do shifts in the warehouse to get their clothing discount but that doesn’t mean they don’t know their way around a bit of hard-wearing utility workwear. Check out Joshua, Nawal and Ruddy here demonstrating that all work with just a little bit of play can make Jack a very stylish boy indeed.

As a serious skatehead, straight-cut utility pants are basically a second skin for @asos_joshua. The skate scene embraced solid, scuff-resistant worker pants in a big way in the '90s, making cult brands of traditional trade apparel companies like Dickies and Carhartt. Two decades on, the workpant remains a skate staple and a utilitarian steez go-to. Joshua amps up the 9-5 vibes with the sort of tan short-sleeve shirt you might wear to pump gas and a big ol’ cup of morning joe.

With this get-up, @asos_nawal is checking a couple of utility trend boxes. There’s the hi-vis vest straight out of the FW18 emergency orange trend, which he’s layered over the more timelessly proletarian combination of a blue pin-stripe worker jacket and matching worker pants. The jacket’s capacious pockets and riff on the name tag deliver bonus utility points, while posing in front of a giant crane is a strictly optional means of further boosting your blue-collar credentials.

Of course, utility style isn’t all about looking like you’re heading off for a day’s graft — functional fits, with their clean lines and classic silhouettes, are a great foundation for building something a little more "for the weekend" too. Look at @asos_ruddy here: he’s taken a Dickies utility jacket and teamed it with another hardware-store staple — overalls. Only these overalls are done up in a distinctly off-duty teddy-fur texture, which cleverly ties in the funkier touches elsewhere (canary-yellow Nikes and bold patterned polo shirt). Stellar stuff — give that man a half-day off.
