HOW TO WEAR FLEECE IN 2019

January 6, 2019

With temperatures taking a nosedive, it’s time to talk about fleece. From dadcore fringe piece, the teddy-texture fabric has become a layering essential of late — helped, in part, by outdoor heritage brands such as The North Face and Patagonia becoming streetwear staples. No longer reserved for a brisk hike, fleece styles have seen a road-ready revival in bold prints, tonal colorways and steezy shapes. Check out our three fresh ways to wear the fuzzy favorite...

Consider clashing

Talking of standout prints, get a load of this zebra stripe ASOS DESIGN number. Successfully banishing any notion of dreary country walks (as well as sub-zero temps), it's a great way of adding a flash of color to an otherwise tonal, layered look. Try it underneath this check ASOS WHITE trench for a bit of print-clashing goodness, much like the looks served up by both Versace and Dolce & Gabbana during Milan's SS19 Fashion Week. Matching check Converse ensure you're doubling up on the square stakes while those gray cargo-style pants strip the 'fit back a little to make the most of the clash up top.

Protect ya neck

When it comes to this winter's fleece fashion, we’re not just talking jackets. Scarves are a necessity in the depths of January and what better way to keep those plunging temps at bay than with a precision-engineered fleece piece? For a bold-is-best aesthetic, pair a bright scarf with a loud, grandmother-pleasing sweater — just because the skies are gray, it doesn’t mean your look needs to be. With all that color up top, tone things down by opting for some washed-out skater-fit jeans and classic boxfresh Reeboks. Extra points for matching your kicks to the accents on your knit.

Take a hike

The fleece revival isn’t the only thing to come out of FW18/19's outdoor aesthetic. The whole hiker-style vibe is a key look for the season, even if your hike only consists of that semi-steep hill to the bus stop. So, for an all-over outdoorsy look that doesn't necessarily require being pummeled by freezing winds and rain, take this beige zip-up jacket from Patagonia and team it with brown corduroy pants, two important shades for the season. Add a camo print The North Face backpack for a pop of color as well as keeping those essentials safe, then finish off with some hiker-style shoes. Combining chunky soles and rope-style laces — you’re nailing two trends with one pair of kicks. Ideal.
