INSPIRATION AND ADVICE

6 STREET-STYLE STARS FROM MFWM FW19

By Matt Glazebrook, January 20, 2019

Milan: leading light of Lombardy, home to a couple of iconic (and stylishly shirted) sports teams and, for a few days each January and June, host to Europe’s most fashion-forward fellas. As the FW19 menswear shows wrap up, we’re looking to some of the strongest street-stylers who descended on the city for fashion week for our sartorial inspiration.

Look at this cozy boy, keeping it real for January in brown tonal checks. No standing outside the shows shivering in something fabulous but utterly unseasonal for him. Nope, it’s a big statement puffer jacket, done right up, sensible winter boots to tie in some of the tans up top, and a black beanie and matching jeans to finish. Fashion week 1, winter 0.

This guy, by contrast, has got off on the wrong foot with his snazzy-but-impractical sockless slip-ons — a sort of deconstructed cowboy shoe that’s making our ankles feel cold just by looking at them. Luckily, he more than recovers his composure up top with a toasty, teddy-fur overcoat in charcoal, a brilliant blanket scarf in brown check and a nice pair of burgundy chinos to bring the palette together. Now, as long as he keeps sheltering behind that van, he’ll stay snug and street-style-snappable in equal measure.

You bought a strong, statement suit for the festive season, you crushed it at the work holiday party and that big New Year’s bash. But now the tinsel’s packed away and the only formal function on the horizon is a family brunch where a patterned two-piece is frankly not going to cut it. Fear not! Make like this showgoer and tone down your tailoring with Converse and a cold-curing turtleneck. From extra to everyday in the blink of an eye.

Grandmacore (think of it as dadcore played on extreme level) hit the catwalks last winter, but we’ve yet to observe much of it in the wild. Shuffle forward, this lady, rocking the heck out of styles several decades her senior. Turns out, granmother-fashion isn’t as tricky as we first thought — just grab some practical, oversized coziness (that puffer jacket, that big-ass beanie) and keep the whole color scheme in low-key, vintage-style browns and drabs.

Hiking chic isn’t going anywhere for 2019 (and certainly not up a mountain — it remains very much the key cold-weather cover-up for the more sedentary, sartorial adventurer). Look at this urban outdoorsman — his pocket-heavy anorak in '80s YHA shades says striking out for the Dolomites' summit, but his canvas Vans Authentics say nothing more strenuous than a stroll to the nearest enoteca. And check out his hands — where you might expect him to be clutching a map, he’s actually got a fistful of (no doubt front row) fashion week tickets. Standard.

This fashionable fella’s somehow channelling retro checks, '70s bedsit color scheme steez, DIY punk attitude and '90s dadcore in a single look. Best of all, he’s doing it in a chunky padded jacket that’s comfortably besting the Milanese freeze. Nailed it.
