INSPIRATION AND ADVICE

HOW TO WEAR OVERALLS RIGHT NOW

By Caroline Ferry, October 21, 2018

If overalls conjure up images of painter/decorators, then let us jog your memory because there have been many iconic overall moments over the years. Rachel wore hers in all kinds of iterations in '90s-era Friends. Tai wore a cut-off patchwork pair to party in Clueless. And Carrie wore hers with a striped tank and wellies to Aidan's upstate cabin in Sex and the City. Historically, they've been adorable, but for FW18, they're all grown up. Here are three ways — from the catwalk, the 'gram and beyond — to wear yours for the new season.

Go fancy

Sure, the hat ain’t that versatile, but the overalls certainly are. Here’s how to dress yours right up to the nines, à la John Galliano’s FW18 collection. The styling is easy — it's essentially just jeans, boots and a going out-out top. A formula we’ve known and loved since the 2000s tbh. The only difference this time round is that the denim is a cuffed-hem onesie, not the rain-absorbing flares of yore. Keeps your strides wide-fit and distress free and you’ve got this.

If dressy overalls aren’t the one for you, let ASOS Insider Scarlett be your poster girl for the trend in her red, white and blue get-up. Add some fall excellence to a simple overall and white tee combo with chunky-sole sneakers in '90s brights, and a matching shacket to tie the whole thing together.

Classic hits

So simple, and actually so underrated, we’ve got a lot of time for this sporty iteration of the overalls trend. A clean and crisp white T-shirt and matching sneakers will be your number one hun for brunching and leaf-kicking in this weekend. Layer a sweater underneath and a parka over the top when the chills set in.
