STYLE AND CULTURE

MEET FOUSHÉE

By Hallie Liang, February 7, 2019

Armed with a voice that simply commands attention, be it that of a Sofar Sounds audience or Adam Levine on The Voice, Fousheé is the soul singer whose name will be the one to know this year. While the Harlem native comes off as shy and soft-spoken, her music and on-stage presence are brimming with attitude and energy. We sat down with the rising star to chat musical inspiration, style, and — of course — those Valentine's plans (spoiler alert: they're pretty badass).

Describe your style in three words:
"Rude, sexy, effortless."

How does fashion and style play a role in your music?
"Fashion plays a major part in my music. What I’m wearing that day effect my mood which trickles into the lyrics I write. If I’m wearing something sexy chances are I’m going to write a sexy love song. On the other hand, if I’m wearing a leather jacket for example, I’m probably going to channel my inner rebel. I have a pretty active imagination so activating all my senses (especially visually) only helps me paint the lyrical picture more clearly."

Craziest thing you've ever worn:
"One time I wore a neon pink bathing suit for a show. My style has changed a lot since then but I admire the nerve I had to go on stage wearing that."

What are your favorite eras of fashion and music?
"The present. I think 2019 is a beautiful blend of past and present in both music and fashion. We have the freedom to express ourselves creatively in whichever way we see fit."

Tell us about your favorite gig you’ve ever played:
"My favorite gig I played was a Sofar Sounds and Ray-Ban show. It was snowing that night but the room was still filled with eager music lovers. The acoustics in the room were perfect, the show poster was beautiful and I even got to pick out two pairs of Ray-Ban shades."

What’s the best part of doing shows with Sofar Sounds?
"I’m always in awe of how appreciative the crowd is to hearing new artists. There’s always a packed room so promotion is one less thing we have to worry about. It gives a chance to focus on the art and connecting with new people."

How do you like to dress while performing on-stage?
"I like to stand out and be comfortable at the same time. Chains and/or a cool blazer make me feel like the badass superhero I imagine myself to be in my mind. Also, a simple crop top is usually the go-to that puts a smile on my face."

Tell us about your recent work. What are you most proud of?
"One of my biggest achievements so far has been getting the opportunity to be on season 15 of The Voice. There’s no feeling like being able to sing for an audience that large and making my family proud. The recent release of my EP Speak Up is also something I’m extremely proud of. It was so freeing to be able show who I am in music form. Since then I think my sound has changed a lot but growth is a beautiful thing in my opinion. If you’re not growing you’re dying."

Valentine’s Day is coming up — any plans?
"Yes! I’m dropping my new single Stay Home on Valentine’s Day so I might do just that. Stay home and celebrate my new release."

Describe your ideal date night plans and outfit:
"My ideal date would be good food in a dimly lit restaurant with good wine and some smooth soul music playing in the background. I’d be in something black, short, and silky dripping in gold accessories. Some sexy open-toe heels would be a great cherry on top."

What can we expect from you in 2019?
"A lot of new music and new visuals! I’ve been collaborating with a lot of new producers and artists. Working with different people brings out a different side of me that I think will surprise a lot of people. I also see myself touring very soon."
