ASOS MAG CHATS WITH EDWARD BLUEMEL

June 8, 2019

Since graduating from drama school in Wales, 26-year-old Edward Bluemel has worked in roles running the gamut from a vampire scientist in A Discovery Of Witches to a "naughty office intern with a penchant for older women" in Touch, a play by Vicky Jones, who directed the stage version of Fleabag. And, with appearances in Killing Eve season 2 and Sex Education, this year his career is moving up another gear. For their Summer 2019 issue, ASOS Magazine met the actor to know — read excerpts from the convo below and order your copy of the mag for the full article, plus interviews with Mabel, Khalid and lots more.

On growing up
I’m from rural Somerset and wanted to be a farmer. I had a flat cap and checked shirt and thought I was the real deal. And a dentist — I liked the idea of sliding around on a wheelie chair with a load of tools. That was fleeting. I realised that, as a dentist, nobody’s ever happy to see you.

On Killing Eve
[My character] Hugo works with Eve in MI6. He’s a super-privileged white boy, who’s there because of connections. When [the first season] came out, there was a buzz. It upped the pressure, but I hope that brought out the best in everyone. You’d get the argument that people didn’t want to watch [shows fronted by women] but it proves people do. It’s putting complex women at the forefront in a genre associated with men. I hope it leads to more things being subverted, not just with women, but also with class or color.

On Sex Education
Most of the leads are stars now but, at the time, it was just a bunch of interesting, talented but also normal, down-to-earth people. We filmed in last summer’s heatwave, everyone was in a great mood and it didn’t feel like work.

On male mental health
I live in a shared house — five boys, all actors. Seeing them go through phases has woken me up to how sad people can get and how irrational it can be.

On his style
I like to peacock. Silly jackets and shirts. Anything a cowboy might wear, I’m in.

On his summer plans
[I'll be in] London and Cardiff filming A Discovery Of Witches Season 2. Me and my friend have been asked to MC at a friend’s wedding in Tuscany. I’m panicking thinking of gags…
